I love a good quote. This year, I bought a calendar with various positive affirmations on each month which I like to look at every morning. My ‘wise words’ board on Pinterest probably has the most pins on it. I’m planning on getting them all printed and framed to display around the house.
I think the reason I love a good, relatable quote, is that it makes me feel less lost. If there are words that someone has strung together that can so completely describe my current situation or thoughts, then someone else must have gone through something similar and come out of the other side. Does that make sense?
It makes me feel understood on a quiet level, instead of a shouty social media level. I read quotes sometimes and it helps me to accept my own thoughts. I really like quotes that make me feel hopeful and positive. I’ve noticed a lot of people struggling recently with motivation and a lot of “what’s the point?” discussions going on, especially on Twitter. So, I wanted to share my favourite quotes that can help change my mindset whenever I start to feel pessimistic about the future.
When nothing is sure, everything is possible. Margaret Drabble. As a very anxious person, I often feel uncertain about the future. This quote reminds me of the positive side of that. Yes, the unknown is scary, but that also means anything can happen.
The grass is greener where you water it. Neil Barringham. This one reminds me that I have the capacity to create my own future. If I feel out of control or that I don’t have a say about what happens to me, this reminds me that I’m wrong.
What if I told you 10 years from now your life would be exactly the same. Doubt you’d be happy. So, why are you afraid of change? Karen Salmansohn. A lot of people, myself included, are afraid of the consequences of change, or of changes they didn’t choose. This one affirms that change is fine. I should make changes because it helps me move forward.
You have brains in your head, and feet in your shoes, you can steer yourself in any direction you choose. Dr. Seuss. Am I even allowed on Pinterest if I don’t have a Seuss quote? For me, this one captures a negative feeling of uncertainty and makes it light-hearted. Standard Seuss. If I’m feeling unsure on what my next step should be, this prompts me to take others out of the equation and remember that I’m capable of making good choices.
Good things come to those who wait, or those who are willing to get up and get shit done. Anonymous. I tend toward avoidance and passivity if I feel overwhelmed. And thinking about the future often does overwhelm me. I definitely need this quote on my fridge, or something, because it reminds me I doing something, however small, is better than nothing.
Don’t let a bad day make you feel like you have a bad life. Anonymous. A popular one, I think. It makes me feel that, just because I may have made the wrong decision, that doesn’t mean my entire future changes.
Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking that you have something to lose. You are already naked. There’s no reason not to follow your heart. Steve Jobs. This one really resonates with me. In a non-morbid way, I do try to think like this. The last part is the best; I can’t think of any reason not to ‘follow your heart’.
Growth is painful. Change is painful. But nothing is as painful as staying stuck somewhere you don’t belong. Mandy Hale. For me, this summarises the consequences of giving up on the future. Sometimes I feel like that, like what is the point in doing what I’m doing? Is it ever going to come to anything? But this reminds me that it doesn’t matter, I’m doing what I want to do and that’s where I need to be.
Before you ask which way to go, remember where you’ve been. All time low lyric from the song stay awake. Sometimes I feel ill-equipped to make my own decisions. Especially if it’s one I feel will have a big impact on the future. It’s good to remember all the experience you have to draw on though, and you’re still here after all of those choices. They all led you to this point. So where next? It also reminds me to try not to make the same mistake twice!
Follow your soul, it knows the way. Anonymous. Saved this one for last because, at the end of the day, nothing else matters if you’re happy with your own progress. If you know you’re on the right road and that you’re staying consistent with your values, you’re good.
I hope you like these, and that you might remember them when you need to. I’d love to know if any of these are new to you, and if they’ve resonated in any way! And tell me what your favourite quotes are for when you’re not feeling so positive.
